The Ultimate Moving Guide, Checklist, and Supplies

Moving day isn’t just about leaving one address and arriving at another — it’s the start of something new! Of course, there are plenty of boxes, phone calls, lists, and logistics between here and there. The secret is getting ahead of them. This guide brings together smart packing tips, a comprehensive checklist, and helpful resources so you can spend less time wondering what you forgot and more time looking forward to what comes next.

PACKING LIKE A PRO
A smoother move starts before the truck ever arrives. A few smart packing moves now can save you time, protect your belongings, and make unpacking at your new place a whole lot easier.

  • Get an early start. Pack the things you rarely use first and keep moving forward as the big day gets closer.
  • Label every box with what’s inside and where it goes. Future-you will be very glad you did.
  • Keep similar things together when you can. Extra space? Pillows, towels, and bedding make excellent fillers without creating a mystery box.
  • Put those extra blankets and towels to work protecting fragile belongings.
  • Create a packing headquarters. An empty room or garage can keep boxes and supplies organized instead of taking over the whole house.
  • Use stretch or moving wrap to keep loose pieces, drawers, and cabinet doors secured.
  • Give furniture a little armor with moving blankets wherever pieces could rub or bump together.
  • Loading your own truck? An appropriate loading ramp can make the job easier, but use it according to its safety instructions and don’t tackle heavy items alone.
  • Specialty boxes for televisions, dishes, mirrors, and hanging clothes can make both moving and unpacking easier.
  • Use a dolly or hand truck and properly rated moving straps for the heavy stuff. Save your energy — and your back — for the new adventure ahead.
  • Think backward when loading: the things you want first should go in last. And when stacking, heavy boxes belong on the bottom.

BEFORE MOVING OUT

  • Stock up on moving supplies and inventory your belongings, especially anything valuable.
  • Start packing several weeks ahead if you can. Label boxes with both their contents and destination rooms, and watch that mountain of boxes become progress you can actually see.
  • Find a reputable moving company or moving truck rental and reserve early.
  • If everything won’t fit immediately, arrange storage space before moving day.
  • Contact utility providers once your moving dates are known and coordinate disconnects, transfers, and new service. You want the lights — and preferably the Wi-Fi — ready when you arrive.
  • Make a moving-day plan for children and pets so everyone stays safe and the busiest hours run more smoothly.
  • Create a Homeowner’s Journal with warranties, manuals, paint information, and service records. Leave one as a useful welcome for the next owner and start a fresh one for your new place.
  • Submit a “Change of Address” with the United States Postal Service.
  • After everything is out, give your old home a final cleaning or bring in a professional service.

WHEN MOVING IN

  • Start fresh with a clean home. Handle it yourself before moving day or schedule a professional cleaning before the boxes arrive.
  • Track belongings as they’re delivered so you know everything made the trip.
  • Unpack the essentials first: medications, toiletries, bedding, chargers, kitchen basics, and whatever will make that first night comfortable.
  • Look for moving damage and document any issues as soon as possible.
  • Find the circuit breaker panel, main water shutoff, and other important systems. Get acquainted with your HVAC equipment and check the filters.
  • Claim one room on day one and get it comfortable and mostly box-free. Congratulations — you already have your first finished space!
  • Consider rekeying or changing exterior locks and getting any security arrangements in place. Scheduling providers ahead of time can make this quick and easy.
  • And please remember: you do not win a prize for unpacking everything in one day. Stop, eat, hydrate, rest, and enjoy the fact that you made it!

AFTER MOVING IN

  • Explore! Find your new grocery store, favorite restaurant, nearby park, medical services, and all the places that will soon make the neighborhood feel familiar.
  • Meet the neighbors when you get the chance. A simple hello is a great start.
  • Update your address with your employer, financial institutions, insurers, subscriptions, and other important contacts.
  • Update your driver’s license or identification and voter registration as required.
  • Then celebrate. Seriously. Order dinner, raise a glass, sit on the floor if the furniture isn’t assembled yet — and enjoy your first moments in the place you now call home.
